FYI

I created an Off Topic Category for the Forum. I have messaged with several members over the last couple weeks and some today. After much thought I feel that although Off Topic conversation is not what the Forum is meant for, it will happen regardless. So making a place for it may help to keep it there.

I do this because most people end up finding themselves not visiting the forum as frequently or joyfully when there is a lot of divisive discussion occurring. Although we have certainly had our fair share of on topic divisive discussion as well. That is just part of the hobby and many of those conversations, especially looking back, were absolutely needed. So do not misunderstand my intention. It is not to stifle any voice and I encourage all on topic discussion. And if you want to discuss something off topic there is now a place to do so...

I took the liberty of kicking it off by moving the Random Picture Friday thread and if there are others you feel would be better there, let me know. I will consider to move them but moving forward there will be a place for new threads.

Great idea!

I'll be brave and be the first one to vote the Covid-19 thread "Gets the boot" over to the Off Topic section.  If I want to catch up on the drama, I'll know right where it can be found!  Ã°Å¸ËœÅ“

If it ain't paper related then send it on over to its new location!

...anyone willing to second the motion??

Keep in mind since the forum change, the Topics button has been my go to, so moving off-topic threads won't necessarily keep them from dominating the index....

I never noticed the “Topics” tab until you just mentioned it!

Steve in Tampa

I also agree, great idea.
Working at Mercedes-Benz of Tampa had some interesting perks. The service advisors would alert me when a celebrity or sports star would visit the dealership and I kept a camera at my desk and would come running. The New York Yankees spring trained next door at Steinbrenner Field and many Yankees and Buccaneers drove our cars and visited the dealership.

This is a local boy and former first baseman for the NY Yankees, Tino Martinez. He would later play for the Tampa Bay Rays.

This is one of Tino’s teammates, Chuck Knoblauch who played second base for the Yankees on several championship teams. He was smaller than I thought he would be, and a super nice guy. c.1998

I understand the sentiment, however that thread has now drifted (mostly) back on topic. If it drifts back off topic, I will move it. I do think discussing the impacts of Covid and the hobby (specifically) is worthwhile...

And if other threads drift off topic, we have a place to move them much quicker in the future.

Not "Random Picture Friday"! That was a small respite after slogging thru the  other threads. I don't use the Topics tab that often.

I second (or third or whatever) Tooky's motion.  It was/is just polarizing (unlike the innocuous random picture friday thread) at best and didn't drift but almost immediately became politicized.  It's not as if there aren't a myriad of threads elsewhere on the same topic.  Moving it to an off topic section is a much better option providing those who feel compelled to discuss a fine place away from those of us already sated by the topic 24 x 7.
Always interested in St Louis MO & IL metro and Evansville IN paper money, scrip, financial docs, banking ephemera, etc.  Also collect Latvian 1915 - 1940 city and national paper money by block letter/variety

The covid thread is the definition of off topic.

The thing is, for me, "Topics" is always my first click, so I won't even notice this ...

Clicking "Topics" brings all current discussed topics to the top in order of most recent. So whatever has been recently discussed will show there, including this topic if it has activity.

That's like taking your car out for a push, and not using the motor that often. Topics is where it is at. I don't even know the categories anymore, I just see what folks are talking about and add my own cheap notes and pointless drivel to the discussions...

Well ya got me to chuckle over your analogy. ÃƒÂ°Ã…¸Ëœâ€š It appears that I actually use the topics version now. I was unable to log in for a month and that made it nearly impossible to read. All the threads would start at the 1st post, nothing was in the order that I had viewed and I found myself rarely visiting PMF. John finally figured out how to get my account straightened out. He had to delete my email addy, put in a bogus one, delete the fake and put in the correct one that got me up and running. Only thing I could figure out was a Firefox update threw a monkey wrench into my settings somewhere.
