The Bureau of Engraving & Printing is planning to host a meeting with members of the Souvenir Card Collectors Society at the ANA show in Chicago next week. It will be held on Wednesday, August 14 at 4 PM at the BEP booth #1825. BEP Director Olijar will be there. This is always an interesting conversation -- pretty casual, and they usually bring mock-ups of next year's designs for the intaglio print program. If you are on the fence about coming to the show, maybe this will help you decide. Any SCCS member is welcome to come.

Also, the BEP is planning to raffle a single special edition card at the show. We aren't sure which of the three Moon Landing cards it will be, but they will raffle chances to purchase -- 10 cards a day for the five days of the show. So only 50 spider press cards, which is surprisingly low.
I'll let you know when we find out more.

Quick report on our meeting. Actually, we had two. The first one included BEP Director Len Olijar. For that one we gave our comments on how well the new ordering system has been working since the BEP came onboard with the Mint. They were quite surprised to hear about some of the ordering issues and glitches in the system. Some of that feedback will be going back to the Mint. They are definitely still in transition have some bugs to work through.

The second meeting was on next year's theme for the intaglio print program. We got to see two sets of mock-ups, one more colorful, the other subdued. Sorry no photos allowed. Both included portraits of the presidents from that era. One also used a number of WWII stamp designs. The SCCS members present were almost evenly split in their preferences. We gave them some design feedback and they will make some alterations. They only have three months to lock in the final design.

What we discovered the next day was that the US Postal Service, which now has ownership of the BEP printing plates for all the US stamps, is in the process of moving them, so they cannot be used right now. So probably no stamp designs on next year's cards and things are somewhat up in the air for how they will be redesigned.

But I did feel that it was a very good meeting and they are quite responsive to collector interests and suggestions. No bank note representation on next year's cards but that's somewhat understandable because of the theme. They aren't opposed to reprinting currency, we just need to find them a good reason. If anyone has ideas about what could be the theme for 2021, please let me know. They do like topics that could be used collaboratively on coins from the Mint.
