Cody’s recent brown back pickup inspired this thread.

Large size “brown back” National Bank Notes were issued from 1882 to 1908. They’re found in $5, $10, $20, $50 and $100 denominations. They feature some of most interesting vignettes and are eagerly sought by large size collectors. Somewhat pricey in all grades. Why brown backs ? Why were they issued ? Anyway, here’s a few. Share yours. Thanks.

Nice notes all! One of my favorite series. Great demonstration of how beautiful our currency used to be.

A few '82 BB oddballs, some of which have been previously posted:

Very rare signature as President of Frederick A. Pabst, founder of Pabst Brewery in Milwaukee:

Pabst.jpg
Error note: Single upside signature:

Milwaukee, 82BB, (ch.5458, Marine NB), $10, ERROR, invert sig.jpg

Federal RADAR serial on a so-called "Cigar-Box" layout note:

NY, NY, 82BB, ch.1394, Amer. Exch NB, $5, RADAR, A133331A.jpg

Old style "Star note" denoting a re-engraved or "re-entered" front plate:

NY, Utica, 82BB, ch.1395, FR469, FNB, $5, Re-engraved STAR note.jpg

I wonder if future generations will look back on our current currency and think they were as beautiful as we think these are?

Only if art becomes incredibly sterile. Our currency is boring. Our coins are boring. Besides in 100 years we will probably a cashless society.

The tellers at my branch always ask me what to look out for. I showed them a $500 FRN and a National issued from the building they are in. Their comment "Wow! This looks like REAL money!" We are now nearly a generation out of the "small head" design. Show a 16 year old a 1993 $50 and it will blow their mind.

Some pretty amazing notes. There is so much variety (and ways to collect) even in just Brown Backs, as Doctor Paper touches upon. That serial #1 Clayton, NY is fairly mind blowing - it is hard to believe that it has survived all these years in such pristine condition. Circulated or Gem CU, all of these have their own unique story to tell. You have to love Nationals.

I only have a couple brown backs, including one from a local bank that I've posted previously.

From Our corporate archives. NFS. Edit to add our computer crashed recently and for some reason I don't have the reverse pic now. Will have to pull it out and reshoot when I have time.
